MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) – Volunteers with the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee gathered together on Tuesday May 28th to make The Mariucci Family Beacon House a little more beautiful.

“Today is one of my favorite days of the year,” said Mary Tavernini Dowling, the CEO of The Mariucci Family Beacon House. “This is the day the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee comes and they beautify our place. This is a gorgeous building, it’s 27,000 square feet of love, but that means it also has a lot of area around the exterior that need flowers. So there will be flowers and herbs and edible flowers and all kinds of wonderful things planted. And it’s just adding more joy to our beautiful place.”

The volunteers planted colorful decorative flowers, herbs, and edible flowers for visitors to enjoy during difficult times.

“You know, it is scientifically proven that people who are exposed to the environment that are in the outdoors, that just looking at a plant or a tree changes your chemistry,” explains Mary Tavernini Dowling. “It’s actually a very healing thing. To me, I just I love looking out the windows. I love stepping out here and seeing the beautiful flowers and the gardens, it just brings so much joy. And with our guests, of course, that’s what this is all for. They’re going through so many different things. We have 22 rooms here, and at any given day, we can have five people who are battling cancer. Someone whose wife is in the hospital and is struggling since a heart attack. So people are going through some really, really tough times and to give them a loving, joyful distraction, I think is a very, very important thing. And we’re very glad to be able to do that.”
